Perots United We Stand America organization is slated to meet in Dallas Aug. 11-13. Over the past week or so, Perot's invitations have been accepted by GOP presidential candidates including Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas, Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, former Tennessee Gov.

Lamar Alexander and commentator Pat Buchanan, according to campaign spokesmen. The New York Times has quoted Perot as saying the other GOP contenders had accepted as well. And, barring a conflict, House Speaker Newt Gingrich is expected to attend, an aide to the Georgia lawmaker said. Several of Perots state organization leaders took the invitations as evidence that Perot has decided against turning United We Stand into a third party and is searching for another way to influence the 1996 campaign. Judge denies bail for bombing suspect EL RENO, Okla.

(AP) A federal judge has denied bail for bombing suspect Terry Nichols saying he is a flight risk and forbade any more unwanted visits to his cell by a prison psychologist. After an 80-minute bail hearing inside the prison Friday, U.S. District Judge Davis Russell also ordered prison officials to end the practice of leaving lights on in Nichols cell all night long. Nichols and Timothy McVeigh are charged in the April 19 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City.

The blast killed 1 68 people and injured more than 500 others. Defense attorney Michael Tigar argued that Nichols has strong roots in his community and would not pose a danger if he were released. Russell rejected that argument, and also ruled that Nichols would pose a flight risk if released. I find that there is clear and convincing evidence that no condition or combination of conditions could reasonably assure the safety of the community, he said. Garage sale item might be Longfellows HOUSTON (AP) A man who bought an old wooden frame for pocket change at a garage sale last year belatedly noticed it contained a poem tentatively authenticated as a manuscript by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Dorothy Z. Baker, an English professor at the University of Houston, believes the faded blue verses are a draft of The Village Blacksmith. The poem, published in 1840, begins: Under the spreading chestnut treeThe village smithy stands. Baker said she is 99.5 percent certain.

Because words are marked out and lines recast, she considers it an important artifact for scholars and unlikely to be a forgery. Record TRAVELING? Let Us Do the Work When It Comes to Your Dividend Reinvestment Death toll rises to 961 in Sakhalin quake MOSCOW (AP) The death toll from an earthquake in Russias Far East rose to 961 today, and an aftershock with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 jolted the region, news agencies reported. Two more people were found alive in flattened apartment buildings in the town of Neftegorsk on northern Sakhalin island, ITAR-Tass said. It said 51 bodies were recovered late Friday and today.

A 7.5-magnitude quake struck the region last Sunday, and officials fear as many as 2,000 of the towns 3,000 residents were killed. ITAR-Tass and the Interfax news agency quoted Minister for Emergency Situations Sergei Shoigu as saying 1 ,367 people have been pulled from the debris of collapsed houses. Only 406 were alive. Shoigu said rescue efforts were hampered by cold and rain. ITAR-Tass said a 4.2-magnitude aftershock struck today with an epicenter similar to Sundays quake, off the northern shore of Sakhalin.

Pope prays before tomb of king BRUSSELS, BelgiumJAP) Pope John Paul II interrupted his official visit to Belgium on Saturday to pray at the tomb of King Baudouin, the late monarch who refused to sign a law liberalizing abortion. John Pauls unscheduled trip to the royal estate on the outskirts of Brussels underscored his support for world leaders who share his moral views. Officially, the pope was in Belgium to beatify a 19th century Belgian missionary, Father Damien De Veuster, who worked and died among the lepers of Hawaii. The ceremony was scheduled for Sunday outside the citys basilica.

The pope arrived Saturday afternoon at Melsbroek airport outside Brussels and was greeted by King Albert II and Queen Paola. Recalling Baudouin, Alberts older brother, the pope said: I wish to pay homage to his memory. King Baudouin died in 1993. His widow, Fabiola, joined the pope at the crypt at Laken, just outside Brussels. Vatican sources said the pope wanted to pay tribute to the king for his strong position against the abortion law.

The kings refusal to sign the law in 199C won him high praise from the Vatican, which hailed the decision as a noble and courageous choice dictated by his very strong moral conscience. Report: Dont drink water, breathe air MOSCOW (AP) The Soviet Union developed industry with little regard for the environment, and now all of Russias big cities have unhealthy air and half its people drink unsafe water, according to a damning new report. In the 60 to 70 largest Russian cities, the air pollution level is at least 10 times higher than normal several times a year," said Viktor Danilov-Danilyan, minister of environmental protection. Of Russias 148 million people, 40-50 million are exposed to air pollution 10 times higher than normal, and 55-60 million others live with pollution five times higher than normal, said a ministry report released Friday. Car exhaust accounts for almost 44 percent of urban pollution.

The worst exhaust-choked cities are Moscow and St. Petersburg. lYacking your dividend reinvestments through several company-sponsored plans can be time-consuming. And what do you do about companies that dont offer such a plan? Let A.G. Edwards do the work for you.
